How Are Citizen Canine Adventure Hikes Different from Dog Walks?
- Groups of up to six dogs will hike with an experienced and specially trained Citizen Canine staff member for at least 90 minutes of exploring in the East Bay Regional Parks! Our Behavior & Training staff scoured the area to find the best trails where you dog can amble through shady forests, gallop in grassy meadows, and clamber up rolling hills!
- With expansive and variable park terrains, Adventures Hikes provide much more physical stimulation than a neighborhood walk over flat sidewalks, dog parks or beaches.
- Adventure Hikes provide time to practice good doggy social skills and explore new sights and smells, giving your dog more mental stimulation than just walking alone with a dog walker. You will see this when your dog returns from their very first hike!
- Hike Leaders are long-term, seasoned staff members who have demonstrated a commitment and excellence in dog care, non-aversive dog training and behavior modification, reading dog body language, dog-dog interactions, safety, and personal responsibility for the dogs in his/her care. They are not your average dog walker!
- Every Adventure Hike Leader is proficient and certified in Pet First Aid & CPR. Each Adventure Hike Leader has also completed a specialized training course developed by the Citizen Canine Behavior & Training Department focused specifically on the unique skills required for safe and enjoyable off-leash hiking and pack management.
- Our customized and specially outfitted Adventure Waggin’ provides a much safer, more comfortable and cleaner riding experience for all dogs than dog walkers’ personal vehicles. All our canine adventurers ride in a secured crate, with comfortable resting mat and ample air circulation. All surfaces are cleaned and disinfected after every hike.

Adventures can begin at Citizen Canine or at Home!
We currently hike on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, with plans to add more hiking days and/or afternoon Adventures as needed. We’ll be happy to pick-up and drop-off your pup at home for their Adventure, provided you live within our Chauffeur Zone – Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro or San Lorenzo.
Even if you live outside of our chauffeur zone or just want to add Adventure Hikes to your existing daycare routine, we are happy to accommodate all eligible dogs! Guest dogs who add an Adventure Hike upgrade may miss one regular playgroup at Citizen Canine while out exploring with their hiking group.
If your dog is planning to come for daycare and an Adventure Hike, it is important to be on time at Citizen Canine by 7:30am so our Adventure Waggin’ can leave promptly in order to pick up all anxiously awaiting hikers!
Is Your Dog Ready to be a Canine Adventurer?
In order to keep everyone safe and comfortable on public trails, interested Canine Adventurers must be social to ALL dogs and people, have good recall and general obedience, be able to share treats and water with other dogs, and be comfortable on-leash and riding in a crate around other dogs. All dogs must be up-to-date on their vaccinations and flea/tick prevention program. Please be aware that due to the specific nature of hiking on public trails, not all dogs who are eligible for group play at Citizen Canine will be eligible for the Adventure Hike program. Before any dog may join the program, a member of our Behavior and Training staff will need to speak with you discuss your dog’s behavior and skills relevant to the Adventure Hike program and to answer your questions.

New clients must schedule an In-Person Consultation either via our online registration form or calling 510-562-1750 AND request the additional Adventure Hike Consultation.
